First Tranche of Military Service Records added to The National Archives’ Catalogue

First Tranche of Military Service Records added to The National Archives’ Catalogue

Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers records are now listed on The National Archives’ catalogue and available to order

All British military service records after 1920 were previously held by the MOD in Glasgow.

Records of deceased servicemen and women can be ordered by their next of kin for a £30 fee.

The records are those in series WO 420 and relate to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) regiment.

The records added are of service personnel born more than 115 years ago so only servicemen born before 1917 are included, with more being added over the coming days, with relevant restrictions to protect individuals’ privacy.

To access service records for REME servicemen born later, you need to contact the Access Service Team at  who will check whether the record includes sensitive medical information. For those born less than 100 years ago, you may be asked to provide a death certificate.

You can now access the records by searching for ‘WO 420’ in Discovery, TNA’s online catalogue, and browsing the record listings, which include each man’s name, date of birth and service number.

The actual service records are not available online.

To access a record, you must click ‘Details’ by the man’s name and follow the instructions to order a record to view at TNA’s buildings in London.

It is also possible to order a paper copy of a record using TNA’s record ordering service.

The record will take four working days to prepare.

Police seek help of family history researchers with cold case

Police seek help of family history researchers with cold case

An unidentified woman's body was found near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in 1981.

North Yorkshire police are hoping that family history researchers could help them unlock this cold case mystery.

Police revisiting a cold case investigation into a woman’s mysterious death more than 40 years ago have taken the unusual step of calling on help from amateur genealogists.

Investigators believe gaps in people’s family tree could give them fresh leads that could finally unlock the secrets of the case.

The unidentified woman’s body was found decomposed in undergrowth near Sutton Bank, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, in 1981.

However, police believe she died in 1979. While there are theories that foul play was involved, there has never been enough evidence to officially categorise it as homicide.

Cheshire Roll of Honour

Cheshire Roll of Honour

The Cheshire Roll Of Honour

More Than a Name

The Cheshire Roll Of Honour was originally started to remember all those who lost their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918 who came from the county of Cheshire England. The roll was extended to also remember the men and women who lost their lives in the 1939-1945 world war (WW2). It was decided that along with remembering the ones who never came back, it should also contain those who did. The Cheshire Roll Of Honour NOW also includes the Boer war and all conflicts since 1945.

You can not only read a soldiers profile but also locate where they are buried or commemorated around the world. By putting their stories together and whenever possible a face to a name, keeps the memory of those who gave all, so we could live in freedom today and in the minds of the future generations.

No other county has a Roll of Honour such as this as it covers all conflicts from the Boer War to the present day.

  • 22,633 People listed under WW1
  • 7,154 From WW2
  • 14 From the Boer War
  • Other conflicts 28
  • 932 Civilians
  • In total 30,761 are listed in The Cheshire Roll Of Honour
