Alister Williams "Who was Jones? Welsh Surnames" We all have a Jones in our family! There are relatively few surnames in Wales but different areas of Wales have distinctive groupings of these surnames. This was the result of work by researchers John & Sheila Rowlands who analysed all the surnames from the Welsh marriage registers from 1813-1837 by the old administrative subdivisions of the Welsh counties. For the surname Jones they found the highest incidence of 30.7% in the area around Bala in North Wales. Their technique may assist family history researchers pin point the exact area when their only knowledge is "he was from Wales".
