Our meetings focus on topics relevant to all those researching their family history, including the use of the internet to further your research. We have some more general meetings featuring local topics for those researching in Cheshire and those interested in their locality. The format of our meetings is typically a one hour talk followed by an opportunity to ask questions; and then socialising and the chance to seek advice from other members over refreshments.
Meetings are normally held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Salvation Army Church, opposite Churchill Way Car Park in the centre of Macclesfield, from 7.30pm-9.00pm. We usually replace the July meeting with a visit to a church, archive or other location of interest, and there is no meeting in December.
Visitors are always welcome.
Admission to Macclesfield Group meetings is £2 for members and £3 for visitors.
A monthly update and reminder about meetings is emailed to subscribers to our email list. If you would like to be added to our list, please send a request to the Group Leader.

Some of our 2020 meetings

Tuesday 28th January

History from Local Sources a talk by Ian Doughty

This talk explores the historical possibilities from family memorabilia and local media.

Tuesday 25th February

Wagons West a talk by Ian Cameron.

The gist is this. Three brothers of a Cheshire ancestor of mine converted to Mormonism in its early years in England and in about 1850 set off for the United States with their families, heading for Salt Lake City. They travelled on sailing ships across the Atlantic and on wagons across the Great Plains, with three entirely different outcomes.  The talk looks in detail at the first ten years of the wagon train movement, which was the 1840s, and in the process explodes the myths of Hollywood and TV.  It also looks at the Mormon involvement in the wagon train migration and the fate of my three ancestral uncles.
