in Cheshire

The Wallasey Group is one of two Wirral groups. The Wirral is now part of Merseyside (since 1974) but to genealogists and local historians it will always be in Cheshire!

The Wallasey group covers the following areas:

  • Egremont
  • Leasowe
  • Liscard
  • Moreton
  • New Brighton
  • Poulton
  • Saughall Massie
  • Seacombe
  • Upper Brighton
  • Wallasey Village

These are the areas within the old County Borough of Wallasey and although Wallasey’s history is quite ancient, Leasowe, and Moreton were only incorporated in 1928 and Saughall Massie in 1933.     We are situated in the most northerly part of the Wirral, with the River Mersey and the Irish Sea as natural boundaries and the Wallasey Pool with its dock system separating us from Birkenhead.

Meetings

The Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month, except December, at Claremount Road Methodist Church, Wallasey, CH45 6UE. Admission costs £0.50 for Members and £1.50 for Visitors, which includes tea or coffee and biscuits in the interval. Doors are open from 7.00pm and we start at 7.30 prompt. There is a good, well lit, free Car Park in Taunton Road and easy access to the building.

Help Desk

We also run a Help Desk, every Fridays , from 10.00am to 1.00pm at the Wallasey Central Reference Library, Earlston Road, Wallasey, CH45 5DX. There is free car parking opposite the library.

Here we can offer one to one help to beginners or anyone trying to break down a “brick wall”. We have internet access and there is a good local history collection.

Projects

The ongoing Cheshire BMD project is still making good progress. Volunteers are currently working on Wirral Births and Deaths from 1901 to 1935.

There is always room for more volunteers who are able to visit the Registrar’s Department at Birkenhead Town Hall, Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, Wirral.
