Today [5th july 2022] the shortlist of the most suitable potential locations for the national headquarters of Great British Railways was announced, which will go forward to a consultative public vote to be held online and by post.

University of Chester History and Archaeology students will work with Emily Lanigan and Naomi Watts-Kitto from the Cathedral Works Department on Monday June 20 to contribute to the upkeep of its significant book collection and discuss the work with visitors.
The event is free and part of Chester Heritage Festival, which aims to bring the cityโs history to life and tell t
he stories that have accumulated over two millennia.
Emily and Naomi will train six student volunteers to assess the state of books in the Cathedral Library, collected by Bishop of Chester, William Jacobson in the 19th Century.
They will prioritise them for conservation, and complete aspects of the conservation such as cleaning and binding. The work will be open to the public to view and discuss in the Cathedral nave.
Dr Thomas Pickles, Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Chester, said: โOur students also supported the conservation, the Cathedral event and the Heritage Festival last year. They really enjoyed the experience and chatting to visitors about the work - now the new group is looking forward to volunteering.
โItโs a great opportunity for students to learn new heritage skills for their future careers, to play a part in the preservation of the Cathedral's wonderful book collection, and to raise awareness of the Cathedral, its unique blend of medieval and modern history and all it offers as a public place for the people of Chester and beyond."
People can drop in to the Cathedral at St Werburgh Street and see the work on the collection, on Monday June 20, between 10am and 12pm. Entry is free, however donations are welcome.
An annual event, Chester Heritage Festival is a partnership led by Cheshire West and Chester Council, Chester Civic Trust, Marketing Cheshire, Chester Cathedral and others, with a host of live and online events organised up until June 27.

The Gardens of Eaton Hall, home of The Duke of Westminster, Chester, will be opening for charity on
26 June, 31 July, & 28 August 2022.
The Eaton Hall Gardens Charity Open Days on Grosvenorโs Eaton Estate, Chester, Cheshire, are held on limited occasions each year to raise important funds for local charities. Tickets are pre-book only - no tickets are available at the gate on the day. Tickets are limited and subject to availability. The benefiting charities for the 2022 events are Cheshire Young Carers, Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Kidsbank.

About the gardens
Eaton Hall Gardens extend to 88 acres and have been developed over many years by prominent designers, most recently by Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd. The gardens have a wide variety of planting, including four formal colour-themed rose gardens and grand colour-themed herbaceous borders. There is a newly completed hot border design and a stunning bedding scheme in the Dragon Garden which is not to be missed. Visitors can also enjoy the walled Kitchen Garden, as well as the wildflower garden and the lake walk, where you can take in fabulous views of the Hall and grounds. Finally, the Tea House is filled with roses and herbs and sits perfectly at the end of a short walk past the lake area.
N.B The Camellia Walk (which is only in bloom in early spring) is closed for conservation work.
Eaton Courtyard
At Eaton Courtyard, visitors can take the opportunity to see Eaton Chapel, with its splendid stained-glass windows by Frederic James Shields, dating back to 1870, the carriage museum and former stables, as well as the family history and exhibition rooms.
The event includes charity fundraising stalls in the Courtyard (cash only), a band playing in the garden and a children's entertainer.
