LORD HARDWICKE'S MARRIAGE ACT (1793)

The Importance of the act and its unintentional consequences!

A casual approach to the conduct of marriage in Britain led to the introduction of an Act of Parliament that still has much influence on the legalities of the marriage ceremony today. 

The talk gives examples of marriage both before the Act and after its introduction. 

The introduction of the Act encouraged couples to elope - a subject which holds its own intrigue – and on examples of intrigue, comedy and tragedy we shall dwell!"  

The talk itself will be of a 'light' non-academic nature.
