Family Search and Society of Genealogists websites

As prophesied by Dorothy Bintley at our last meeting familysearch.org has completely changed.  To take advantage of it's new features you will have to register.  These are adding your own photographs and family trees, but just to search you won't need to, just click on search and everything will operate the same as before.

The Society of Genealogists webpage has had a complete makeover and looks pretty good. In addition they have offered handouts from their workshops at WDYTYA to download for free: http://www.sog.org.uk/learn/who-do-you-think-you-are-2013-speakers-handouts/

Tameside Group January Meeting

Brian Hallworth came along to talk about 'From the Old Wife's Mouth'.  Brian is a professional speaker with a portfolio of talks.  His talks started with his interest in the natural world and began to progress with links to the origins of folklore. He is a popular speaker to our group and in December 2011 came to talk about 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and the origin of Christmas customs.  This time he gave us a talk about some of the cures used by knowledgeable women and folklore cures for various ailments - seemingly the more gruesome the most effective.

I am already booking Brian to come along at Easter 2014.

Tameside Group December Meeting

John Parsons came along to tell us about his work as a Town Crier.  Arriving in costume, two tables of memorabilia set out to illustrate his work awards, various photographs and his collection of bells.  Our one speaker who everyone could hear.

The evening concluded with the Astley Arms legendary potato pie - delivered piping hot from next door and a raffle to try to defray the cost.  An excellent evening which everyone enjoyed.John Parsons - Town Crier

Members Email List - Update

Yesterday I attempted to add members to our new members only email list. Unfortunately I had technical issues that mean the method of implementation will need to change.

Apolgies to those few members who received one or more emails (subscribe/unsubscribe) during the failure. You wil not receive any more emails until the issue is resolved.

The arrival of emails was foretold in the December Cheshire Ancestor.

Tameside Group Meeting 14 November 2012

Really good meeting last night of our Tameside Family History Group with record attendance. Adrian Brown gave a talk about his ancestor Seth Backhouse, a Baptist Minister much involved in the Temperance movement, before he became addicted to drink and gambling, spent time in the Workhouse and in Gaol, finally becoming a roving evangelical Salvationist. He was introduced as Seth before travelling forward in time to begin his story. He'd actually managed to procure a copy of Seth's full rigout and wide awake hat. Excellent and Well done!!
