Book Reveiw - Lyn McCulloch

The Irish Family and Local History Handbook by Robert and Elizabeth Blatchford. Published by Robert Blatchford Publishing Ltd.  Paperback 224 pp.  ISBN 978 0 9552399 5 3
Readers will recognise the name Blatchford from the publication known as The Family and Local History Handbook, now in its 13th edition. This is a most comprehensive handbook for those researching their Irish ancestors, It is packed with useful information on what data exists and where and how to access it. Included are some very interesting articles on various topics. I found it fascinating reading and I, personally, have no ancestors in Ireland. I can recommend it to anyone with Irish interests and even those who, like myself, don't, but are still keen to learn about Irish History.

Building the Big Ditch - A Photographic Record of the Construction of the Manchester Ship Canal -       Compiled by Glen Atkinson from the Frank Mullineux Collection. Published 2011 by Neil Richardson. ISBN:  978 185216 170 5 paperback. 59 pp.
This is a collection of pictures which show the methods of construction used and of men at work during the building of the ship canal. The originals were glass slides and glass negatives in the Frank Mullineux Collection. Starting at Pomona, in Manchester, the sequence of images follows the course of the canal to Eastham on the Mersey. It is a fascinating record of the techniques used at the time. Modern 'Health and Safety' dictates were well in the future. Temporary houses and even a hospital were provided for the workers. Glen Atkinson has put together an amazing visual record of the technology of canal building in the late nineteenth century.

Two Hundred Years of Stationary Engines in Stockport

by Bernard Hayes. Published 2011 by Neil Richardson. ISBN: 978 185216 169 9 paperback. 71 pp.
From the first stationary engine installed in a mill by Samuel Oldknow in 1791 Bernard describes the various engines in Stockport mills right up to 2006. We learn about various families and their involvement. The book is superbly illustrated with photographs, diagrams and wonderful old advertisements. Stationary engines seem to have a fascination for many people.  It has made me want to visit the Anson Museum at Poynton even more and I have bought a copy of the book for my son. I really enjoyed reading it myself and can heartily recommend it.

Two CD Reviews - Lyn McCulloch

 CD 1 Review
Ashton under Lyne Poorhouse & Union Workhouse Census 1841-1901
Ros Rafnson put together this list of census information some years ago. It could prove very useful for finding that 'missing person'. You may even be able to identify someone by their initials from the information given.
Macclesfield Union Workhouse and West Park Hospital Death Register 1848-1949
Macclesfield Group of the FHSC transcribed these records, which are not for the squeamish. Date of death and cause of death are given and in some cases where the person came from and who paid for the burial. The detail is fascinating and might save the cost of a death certificate.
Both come on one CD for the reasonable price of £5.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
CD2  Review
Great Warford Baptist Chapel MIs, Rockferry St Peter MIs, Stockport St Peter MIs
Our CD producing team have come up with the idea of putting some of the MIs we have in our library onto CDs in order to make them more accessible to our members. Some of these lists of MIs are not particularly long but may just contain that vital piece of elusive information that we seek or what we like to call 'gold-dust'!
Great Warford Baptist Chapel is one such list. It was hand-written some years ago and has an index plus a list of names which are in the registers but not shown on any of the graves.
Rockferry St Peters MIs are fascinating to browse through. I noticed lots of Liverpool people buried there and several ladies whose husbands had died at sea elsewhere. These MIs were copied about twenty years ago by parishioners. We owe them a great debt as many of the MIs have probably become illegible by now. There is a plan of the churchyard showing the different sections and also two indexes.
Stockport St Peters MIs are also worth a browse, if only for names such as Biddlecombe and Halle but sad to see families like the Williamsons who buried five of their young children.
This is an excellent idea and we look forward to more CDs in the future.

Working Lives of Warrington

Working Lives of Warrington From Old Photographs by Janice Hayes. Published 2011 by Amberley Publishing, The Hill, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 4EP .Paperback 128 pp. ISBN :  978-1-4456-0526-5
Janice's latest offering on the town of Warrington is a wonderful collection of old photographs showing what life was like in the factories and workshops of a hundred years ago and before. Warrington had several glassworks and produced clocks, watches and gas cookers as well as wire and nails and soap powder. Tanning was also a major industry as was the making of chemicals. Firms like Crosfields and Stubs were household names. There were paper and flour mills and breweries. Many people worked in conditions that would be frowned upon today. Janice has interspersed the photographs of people and places with old advertisements and even the odd painting. Each photograph is accompanied by text. The book contains a lot of useful information. If your ancestor lived and woked in Warrington you will find it extremely interesting.

Cheshire Railways - The Age of Steam

Cheshire Railways - The Age of Steam by Robin Jones. Published by Countryside Books 2011. Paperback. 128 pp. ISBN 978 1 846674 155 5
Another good read for those with Railway ancestors or like me, just have fond memories of the days of steam. The book is well illustrated (mainly with pictures of trains!) and mentions many of the men involved in the building and running of the Cheshire Railways. I found the sections on wartime particularly interesting (First and Second World Wars) although I'm too young to remember the latter, of course. Railway 'Buffs' will love this book.
