Membership Changes - These Affect You All

YOU HAVE TO MAKE A CHOICE

For the new membership year commencing 1st July 2015 your key decision is whether you wish to continue receiving a printed version of the Cheshire Ancestor or accept an online alternative.  Page 40 of March Ancestor leads you to see how it looks.

The online file will not be sent as a personal copy: a link will be delivered directly to your email address.

To keep our copyright secure you will need your membership login.

Full details of the new subscription rates; with new bank mandates and other payment forms, are printed in the centrepages of the current editions of CHESHIRE ANCESTOR.

Every member must advise Renewals of their intentions

IN ALL CASES PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR MEMBERSHIP NUMBER AS IDENTIFICATION

UK MEMBERS

ALL existing members - must advise Membership Renewals of their choice for the new membership year commencing 1st July 2015.

Electronic Copy Choice – Renewals must also be given your current email address.

Printed Journal Choice - You must adjust your payment method for the new rate and confirm your postal address

This whole new system requires that:

1.   we must have your current email and postal addresses

2.   you must check your email reasonably regularly

3.   You will need to login to the Society website, needing to know your login details and password.  You can find out there what other treasures the website contains to help you!

Note That Standing Order Mandates Must Be Sent Directly To Your Bank: not to the Renewals Officer!

January 2015: Photo of the month

Alderley Park, c. 1905

This postcard was sent at 7:15pm on Christmas Eve 1905 to Master R Haigh, Post Office, Chelford. It reads: "With best wishes for Xmas from Bainy (?) Alderley Dec 1905".

The postal service must have been a lot better in 1905 than now, if a postcard franked at 7:15pm on Christmas Eve reached its destination in time for Christmas Day!

Bracey/Bracy DNA Study

I am the administrator of a project investigating the genetic relationships between male holders of the Bracey name and it’s variants. We have recently found a cluster of Bracey/Bracy chaps in the USA who are all the genetic descendants of William Bressee of Isle of Wight County, Virginia in the seventeenth century.

The Bracey surname is historically found in three locations in England, South Gloucestershire, Cheshire and Norfolk (apart from a London population from at least 1600 that are considered likely migrants, possibly from all three of those counties). We know that the South Gloucestershire family are genetically distinct from that of the Virginia patriarch and our group would like to probe the relationship between the Cheshire Bressy/Bracey family and these two clusters.

March 2015: Photo of the month

Cottage Homes, Greendale Road, Port Sunlight, early 1900s

This postcard is unused but the reverse tells us it was printed and published by Lever Brothers Limited, who built the homes at Port Sunlight Village in 1888. A boy is merrily bowling his hoop along the road and two girls are chatting together - all three are smartly dressed and wearing hats.

Port Sunlight is now a visitor attraction and you can even book some of the cottages for a holiday! More information about the village can be found on their website at www.portsunlightvillage.com

February 2015: Photo of the month

Astbury, c. 1907

This postcard was sent on September 18th, 1907 to Miss H. Brugess (sic), The Lowe farm, Buglawton, Congleton and bears an intriguing message:

"Dear Harriett, will you ask your mother if she will let you meet me at the Town Hall at quarter to seven on Thursday night. I sent to J.R.(?) and he will tell T. with fond love from a Friend N. I."

So - who is the mysterious N.I.? Did he meet Harriett at the town hall?

Members' Only Research Resources

A new section has been created on our website for members to submit their stories.  These are long articles - much too long for the Ancestor, but probably a little too short for private publishing.

You will need to be logged in, then go to the Members Only menu in the bottom right-hand corner and click on the link for On-line Research Resources.
