Meetings

The Tarporley Group now meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Little Budworth Village Hall, starting at 7.30 pm. All visitors are welcome.

Our speaker in August was Ian May. His talk on Cheshire Curiosities took us from a gruesome murder on the Derbyshire border, via Cheshire’s Styal Mill (whose door-less toilets and absence of plumbing made us glad to be living in the 21st century) to other interesting places and people. We ended up at Parkgate on the Wirral where Emma, Lady Hamilton, the mistress of Admiral Lord Nelson, spent her childhood.

Hilary Ambrose gave us a fascinating talk in September on Victorian Education. Various routes were available to the children of that time from Dame schools, private tutors and governesses, public schools, endowed schools, charity schools, schools of industry and Sunday schools. School admissions registers may be very useful to family historians. They can give a date of birth and an address, supplying information which may not be readily available from other sources.

Our members’ evening in October focused on trying to solve family history mysteries.
