THE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY OF CHESHIRENORTHWICH GROUP
Group Leader : Mr Phillip Cox
14 John Brunner Crescent, Northwich, Cheshire, CW8 1DH Contact the Northwich Group MeetingsThe Northwich Group meets on the second Monday of each month at Hartford Methodist Church Hall, Beach Road, Hartford, starting at 7.30pm. Our group bookstall and library are normally available for inspection at meetings. Non-members are welcome to attend. In July we elcomed Peter Ollerhead - Non-Conformity & Sources of Records. He outlined the various denominations and demonstrated the effects this could have on a town such as Crewe. There are some great sources for the family historian: circuit records, schedules of meetings, offices & members. Some of the Methodist and early Church of England churches have records of seat holders for pews. A most interesting evening. August provided another chance to hold a Problem Solving Evening and some most interesting topics arose. How can a chemist be traced? A picture of Northwich town bridge gave great interest. A birth in the USA, land at Cuddington, and did anyone know of the existence of the Northwich Clarion an early newspaper? We touched on 18th century musicians in the Fusiliers and how they can be traced via army records. Census returns, birth certificates, divorce records and the Stoke to Liverpool canal all cropped up. We all learned from the evening. In September, we elcomed Alan Welch with Tracing your Family History. An impressive wealth of information, documents and certificates unfolded as Alan shared his discoveries. Rather like a jigsaw puzzle, we can gradually assemble fragments of information about our ancestors. The importance of writing down who people are from older members of the family, using directories, tithe maps, wills, army records, family bibles and bonds ere all a great help. Also in September, 55 members and friends enjoyed a cruise on the River Weaver from Acton Bridge to Sutton Weaver. Carl Leckey, MBE, entertained with his account of employment ith British Waterways; his knowledge of the history of the Weaver and its many characters had members reliving life on this once busy waterway. Carl's knowledge of the bridges spanning the Weaver, its viaducts and even local eel catchers kept members amused. The cruise and talk wre particularly useful to members with ancestors who worked the Weaver as boatmen between the Northwich and Winsford areas, and the docks at Liverpool. Carl's collection of maps was most helpful. We passed through Dutton Locks which was an experience in itself - and passed the point here, in the film, Bulldog Drummond crashed his car into the river.
