TAMESIDE'S FAMILY HISTORY GROUP

(FHSC DUKINFIELD GROUP)

PROJECTS

Working in Tameside Register Office transcribing the BMD Indexes for

Ashton-under-Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droyslden, Dukinfield
Hyde, Mottram in Longdendale, Mossley, Stalybridge.

Since April 2002, our group has been involved in transcribing the Tameside Birth, Marriage and Death (BMD) indexes, and making these available on-line, at the Cheshire BMD website. With the cooperation of the Tameside Registrar and his staff we have photocopied the indexes and passed them onto members and volunteers for typing. These are then being checked against the original registers prior to going on-line.

****Now more than 1.5 Million Records on-line****

BIRTHS:

A Total of 573,316 births are now on-line covering all the above towns from 1837 until 1974 when Tameside as an administration area came into being. Recently added 67,088 birth registrations for the combined Tameside Registers 1991-2007

All marriages, totalling more than 175,000, which occurred in any Tameside Churches and Chapels and all Civil Marriages up until 1974 are now on-line. Just added this month 10,000 plus Civil Mariages for 1991-2006.

Dukinfield Old Chapel Monumental Inscriptions

Another project is the transcription of the monumental inscriptions on gravestones in Dukinfield Old Chapel Graveyard. Many of the graves are damaged, cracked or have fallen over. By recording the inscriptions on the graves, this information will be preserved for use by family historians.

St.Mary’s Parish Records

St.Mary’s, Dukinfield is the “Mother” church in the Tameside area. The church, founded in 1825, was originally built on Astley Street. IN 1847, the church began to collapse, as it was found to have been built on the site of an old coal working. A new site was selected on Zetland Street, and in 1854 work began on a church, presbytery and school. In 1856, the new church was formally visited by Bishop Brown.

The records of the church date back to 1823 when the area was a mission and the priest came to the district from Manchester. The records provide an insight into the religious, social and economic history of the area. As the only catholic church in the area, the records have information relating to Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde and Stalybridge as well as Dukinfield.

These original records have now been preserved thanks to a £21,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery. They have been conserved, rebound and microfilmed. The microfilms have been digitised and put onto CD.

Please apply direct to Revd J O O'Doherty at the church for a copy of the CD - email: jo.odoherty@ntlworld.com tel: 330 2424

Ros

A copy of the microfilms was presented to Jonathan Pepler, at the Cheshire Record Office, by Ros Rafnson, the Project Co-ordinator.

Ancestral Trail

Volunteers from our Group are available at Tameside Local Studies and Archives Library on the 1st Tuesday of every month between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm to offer help and advice to those new to Family History, or who are stuck and don't know what to do next.

Experienced volunteers from our group will be there to help answer questions and to show people how best to use the various resources held in the Centre.

Monumental Inscriptions Stamford Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

Ros Rafnson and Eileen Perfect have been recording these inscriptions for some time now. The final section of the derelict churchyard has now been cleared.

Monumental Inscriptions St James' Millbrook

Kathryn Booth and Gay Oliver have just started photographing and recording the MI's, and will be checking these against the Burial Book.

Ashton Poor Law Union Workhouse

The workhouse at Ashton-under-Lyne is one of the few workhouse buildings still standing. It now forms part of Tameside General Hospital. The Master's house 'Fountain House' was occupied until 1950. Unfortunately most of the documents relating to the workhouse were pulped in the 1950's. The Guardian's Minutes still survive and these can be seen at Tameside Local Studies Library in Stalybridge.

book cover

This book Census Returns 1841-1901 attempts to provide Family Historians with some information about the inhabitants of the workhouse. There is a transcription of each return with an index of names for quick reference. A further book is planned which will list burials from the workhouse at all the churches in the Tameside area.

Copies of the book, priced £5.95 can be obtained by sending an e-mail to: our Book Sales Co-ordinator
