THE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY OF CHESHIRECONGLETON GROUP
Group Leader : Mr David Smetham
Little Trees, Gawsworth Road, Gawsworth, Macclesfield, Cheshire, SK11 9RA Contact the Congleton Group Congleton is a small industrial town set in dairy country close to the Peak Park in the south east of Cheshire. Its recent
history is in the manufacturing of silk, and the industry attracted workers into the area in the nineteenth century. Our group consists of family history enthusiasts with a broad
knowledge of national and local history. We have a library of local family history information, and there is a good local studies section in Congleton Library. MeetingsThe Congleton Group normally meets on the third Tuesday of each month at Congleton Library, Market Street, starting at 7.30pm. There is ample parking, and access to the library is by the lower entrance. Non-members are welcome. Our second summer outing was in August when we ran a coach trip to The National Archives at Kew. John Wood welcomed us and we had an enjoyable and interesting trip. Our thanks go to our Treasurer, Barbara Brampton, for her dedication and efficiency in organizing our summer outings. In September we held our AGM at which David Smetham was re-elected Group Leader, Barbara Brampton as Treasurer, Sue Parker as Projects Co-Ordinator, Phil Walton as Librarian and Lesley Smetham as Book Sales and Publicity. David Johnson kindly brought along a selection of books to the meeting and ably described their contents. In October, Alan Bardsley gave a talk on his experience of undertaking a one-name study. This was quite a wide-ranging talk from the reasons why he and others start a one-name study to looking at population growth tables, sources of information, how to save collected data and making it accessible. He also discovered some unexpected benefits. The talk as ell received and Alan answered questions from members. Programme for 2007
