Meetings

The Chester Group meets on the last Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm at Chester County Sports Centre, Upton Recreation Centre, Plas Newton Lane, Chester. The entrance fee is £1.20; parking is free, and visitors are welcome.

The New Year has got off to a good start , our group is very busy at the moment preparing for our " Chester Family and Local History Day " on Saturday 19th April brtween 10am and 4pm . There will be several local history groups taking part and Chester Family History Group is hosting the event , plus The Register Office , The Heritage Centre , The Record Office ( Duke Street ) and Chester Library etc. There will be a tombola and refreshments and to add colour to the day we have The Sealed Knot Society . We hope to see many members and visitors at the event at the Chester County Sports Club as there is sure to be something of interest to everyone .

Programme for 2008

  • March 2008 - Palaegraphy - Jan Craig Jan will give an introduction to letter forms and abbreviations used in older handwriting, with illustrations taken from documents relevant to family history . This is a must for anyone who has spent fruitless hours trying to decipher old records

  • 24th April - Gwyneth Mitchell - Summoned by Bells Gwyneth?s talk is based on the life of domestic servants in a country house in the 19th century, and will focus on the social backgrounds of those who became servants and their roles, tasks and salaries whilst employed as domestic servants.

  • 29th May - " Research Evening "- We will have C.D's , fiche, library and help desk available , so if you've reached that brick wall - come along and see if it can be broken through .

  • 26th June - Sue Nicholson - Bromborough Manor Court Rolls Sue will introduce us to the manorial system and the types of information that can be found in court rolls, with examples from the Bromborough Court Rolls.

Computer Club

Our computer club for members only meets on the 2nd friday of each month at 7.30pm in the Boardroom of the County Sports Club ,Plas Newton Lane , Chester . Programme for 2008

  • 9th May - Family Tree Maker Update
  • 13th June - Using the Internet in Family History
There will be a charge of £1 per session to cover costs .

There is also a Computer Group for the whole Society
