Meetings

Our meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Lower Room at the United Reformed Church (on the corner of Bramhall Lane South and Robins Lane). There is a large car park on the other side of Robin's Lane, entrance in St Michael's Avenue, which we are able to use.

Our AGM as held in August and the Group Leader, Treasurer and Committee were re- elected to serve another year. Following this, Graham Fidler gave an amusing and useful talk on One-Name Studies using his own experience to illustrate the subject. He also showed us how he maintains and manipulates his database, which members found most illuminating and possibly inspiring.

In September Dorothy Bates, one of our own group members, gave us a tour of her website, Cheshire Records. This developed from a project to  collect historical probate records for fourteen townships around Stockport, some of which have been published in book form. Dorothy showed us examples of local inventories, wills and family trees dating back to the 17th century. The website includes many other historical documents and photographs relating to North East Cheshire.

Alan Rose, a District Archivist with the Methodist Church, came to talk to us in October about Methodist Records. He outlined briefly the history of Methodism, including the divisions which separated and later brought back together various groupings, and explained how the "circuits" were  organised, the type of records they produced and where those records could be found.
