THE FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY OF CHESHIRE
10 Axholme Road, Thingwall, Wirral, CH61 1BJ Contact the Birkenhead Group MeetingsThe Birkenhead Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Charing Cross Methodist Centre, Claughton Road/Exmouth Road, Birkenhead (next to the Fire Station), starting at 2pm. In September, Jean Wylie told us about her Cocoa Room ancestor, William Simpson, who had a café, or shop, at the Pier Head called Simpson's Cocoa Room. One of Liverpool's drinking water fountains was dedicated to him in recognition of his philanthropic works in Liverpool. Our October speaker had to cancel because of illness. Fortunately, David Casement stepped in at short notice. He gave an excellent presentation on Storeton Woods. This included the geology and history of the area, referring to the old quarry. Storeton stone has been used extensively in Liverpool and even as a facing on New York’s Empire State Building. Next year we will be celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Birkenhead Family History Group. We are planning an exhibition that willl focus on Birkenhead's open spaces. We would welcome any memorabilia that we could copy for inclusion in the display, such as photographs or postcards of, for example, Bidston Hill, Birkenhead Park, Arrowe Park. Programme for 2007
