Crewe’s first dedicated newspaper was the Crewe Guardian, the first edition of which was published in 1863 on Saturday, August 29. A member of the extensive Warrington Guardian family of newspaper titles, it launched as the Nantwich and Crewe Guardian and owed its creation to the endeavours of a Scot, Alexander Mackie, born in Dundee on November 22, 1825.

Widely regarded as one of the most successful titles in Mackie’s newspaper empire, the Crewe Guardian fell out of favour towards the end of the 19th century, overtaken by its rival the Crewe Chronicle. Some of the Guardian’s most interesting and enduring material from its heyday is the series of articles published between September 1877 and April 1879, entitled β€œThe History of Crewe.”

Ever since their first being published these articles have been valued by anyone in Crewe with a curiosity about their town’s history and development, and historians, scholars and academics alike. This new transcription of these Victorian-era essays gives a fascinating insight into Crewe’s origins and earliest times and makes the original articles available to a broader audience for many years to come.

Printed in Crown Quarto format this 160-page softback book is published by Mark Potts's MPire Books of Crewe. It includes several contemporary photographs from the camera of Richard Baxter Booth, alongside other illustrations and images. With a Foreword by Leanne Palin (former Crewe Chronicle reporter) the book also provides an analysis of Alexander Mackie and his relationship with Crewe and the town's LNWR benefactors, and the rise and fall of the Crewe Guardian newspaper itself. Also included are comprehensive notes which qualify many of the anomalies contained in the original texts, for the benefit of today’s readers, and a comprehensive index.
