People suffering from dementia and memory loss often find solace in reminiscing about their parents, siblings, and the more distant past. As the ability to create new memories wanes, older memories become more deeply ingrained. Remarkably, individuals with dementia can still recall vivid details from their earlier lives.

Understanding a person’s early life is crucial. It not only provides meaningful topics for discussion but also serves as a memory stimulus. By delving into these formative years, we can engage in more meaningful conversations with friends and family members. These discussions not only benefit the person with dementia but also foster connections and understanding among loved ones.

By helping to cherish early life experiences we can enrich the lives of those with dementia and create lasting connections within families. Exploring known people and places from the past creates common ground among family members. It’s a bridge that connects generations and fosters shared memories.

Jude will start by giving a short presentation which will be followed by questions and group discussion.

More about Jude: 

Jude Rhodes is a professional genealogist who runs Stories of Our Generations. She lives in the Yorkshire Dales and specialises in family and local history in Yorkshire. She is an Associate of AGRA (Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) and an Outreach Team committee member of BALH (British Association of Local History). Jude is also a Registered Adult Nurse. A branch of Jude’s research is 'Exploring Memories Through Family History' where she works with individuals and their families who are affected by dementia and memory loss to create books which assist in meaningful conversations and bring comfort to the individual.

Steve will talk about the destruction of the village of Lidice in 1942  and the part played by Staffordshire and other local people in its re-birth.  In September 1942, coal miners in Stoke-on-Trent, led by Barnett Stross, a doctor, who in 1945 became a local MP, founded the organisation Lidice Shall Live to raise funds for the rebuilding of the village after the war.

Most of us will have agricultural labourers in our ancestry. This talk discusses their lives and the wealth of records which enable us to piece together their lives. The fact that they existed means that documentary evidence exists.

Our speak Ian Waller is a retired professional genealogist with considerable experience in English research.He currently serves as the vice chairman and education officer of the Family History Federation (Federation of Family History Societies) and is a Fellow of AGRA (The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) the body which represents professional genealogists. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists and previously served as a trustee and chairman of the Society Education Committee. He has  authored several books in the Society’s “My Ancestor” series including My Ancestor was an Agricultural Labourer, My Ancestor was a Mormon, My Ancestor was in the Royal Navy and My Ancestor was a Leather Worker and have also written “Family History Research Challenges and how to solve them” and “Introducing Manorial Records” published by Family History Books. Ian has Family History at both basic and advanced levels at various adult education centres in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and currently lecture and run workshops at many family history societies, U3A Groups and other organisations interested in local, social and family history

The Woodhead Railway Heritage Group set up in 2016 have been working for some time to set up a museum at Guide Bridge Railway Station: officially opening early this year. Both Woodhead and Guide Bridge have fascinating and gloomy histories and this visit should be fascinating.
